The Rodopi Mountains, the most lyrical Bulgarian mountain, is located in the most southern part of the country. They are one of the oldest mountains in Bulgaria - the land where panpipes, Orpheus and the Orphic Cult originated, a region rich in gems and ores, mild oval forms and rounded wooded peaks, picturesque villages and hospitable people. The Rodopi Mountains are known for mild climate and numerous mineral springs. The karst areas are a spectacular sight, with their deep river gorges, large caves and specific sculptured forms. This region is also home to the most extensive pine forests in Bulgaria , as well as 15 natural reserves, some of which protected by UNESCO. Perfect for hiking in the summer and skiing in winter at Pamporovo or Chepelare, the average height is low but the highest peak, Mt Golyan Perelik reaches 2190m.
